This past year, Westin Champlin toured the United States attending various automotive events. At all of those events there were drift competitions, because of this, Weston caught the drift bug as everyone does.
He began researching how to drift and what’s required. This led him down a trail to purchase a fox body mustang as his first drift car. As featured in his video, the mustang worked but he needed the proper education to build a foundation off of.
So he turned to Josh Robinson and the Texas Drift Academy. Westin quickly learned the foundational concepts of drifting, rapidly progressing through all of the classes available and eventually ventured out in the dry to try his hand at 60 MPH entries.
After a few attempts learning the limits of the car, Westin was successfully able to drift out of a 60 MPH entry in the Nissan 350z! Afterwards Formula Drift driver, Josh Robinson, got the opportunity to take Westin out in a few fun laps! Some 3rd gear entries and lots of tire smoke later, Westin is fully hooked and ready to build his own proper drift car.
Westin worked together with Texas Drift Academy to build a high level competition 350z out of car that should’ve been left in a junkyard. The initial state of the car was far from promising, with extensive body damage, peculiar scissor doors, and unfortunate past choices. But with the help of Jeff, Dan, and Josh from the Academy, the car underwent a miraculous makeover.
Equipped with a 600HP “beginner” engine from Texas Speed, a full drift angle kit, proper seats, handbrake, and quality coilovers, the 350z was reborn as a force to be reckoned with. Did I mention that the team put together the entire car in under 2 weeks? That’s right. Full LS Swap, Full drift build, all under 2 weeks to be revealed at LS Fest! Naturally, we had to install a proper livery and safe to say its probably one of my favorite parts about the car.
