Gear selection plays a bigger role in drifting than most drivers realize.

The gear you choose determines your wheel speed, throttle response, and how stable the car feels mid-drift. If you’re in too high of a gear, the car will feel sluggish and might just straighten out all together

If you’re in too low of a gear, throttle response becomes overly sensitive. Small pedal movements can cause aggressive spikes in wheel speed, which can lead to over-rotation. This also brings a lot of absue to the engine.

The goal is to choose a gear that keeps the engine comfortably in the power band without constantly bouncing off redline. You want steady, usable torque that allows smooth throttle modulation.

Ideally, select your gear before initiating the drift so you’re not forced to shift mid-corner unless absolutely necessary.

When your gear matches the speed and layout of the corner, everything feels more controlled and predictable.
