This drift technique is so advanced, most drivers don’t even know it exists.
In tandem drifting, the chase driver has to stay close to the lead car without overshooting. You’ve got 3 ways to adjust speed: gas, brake, and clutch.
Everyone knows gas and brake, but the clutch is the secret weapon.
Here’s why: the goal is to keep your tires in their grip efficiency window, just enough wheel speed to hold angle without too much smoke. Too much wheel spin = lost grip and momentum. Formula Drift cars stay fast because they still make mechanical grip while sideways.
So what do pros do?
As they get too close to the lead car, instead of braking or lifting off the gas (which kills proximity), they briefly press the clutch halfway while staying on throttle, this could also be called slipping the clutch.
👉 Stay on gas.
👉 Press the clutch in partially, RPM stays up, but wheel speed drops.
👉 Once grip comes back, release the clutch and slingshot back into the pocket.
This keeps your momentum, keeps you close, and looks insane when done right. 🔥
It’s a high-level move, hard on the drivetrain, but insanely effective once you get comfortable. This will destroy your driveline.
Remember: fast drift cars aren’t loose, the best setups have grip. That’s what makes them rip!
