So, what’s the secret sauce behind these reliable drift machines? It’s a few fundamental components that make all the difference. First up, we’ve got the welded differential – a masterstroke to ensure both the left and right rear wheels spin in harmony, keeping our drifts consistent and predictable. This contrasts with open differentials and limited-slip differentials (LSDs), which can sometimes cause wheels to spin at varying speeds, leading to a less-than-smooth drift.

The Significance Of A Proper Rear End : The Welded Differential

In drifting, how the back of a car behaves is really important. It’s like dancing with your car while driving fast. A good back setup, especially the part called the “differential,” helps you do this dance well. The differential sends power to the car’s rear wheels, and there are two types: one that helps you control the slide (Limited-Slip Differential or LSD) and one that makes it harder (Open Differential). The good one (LSD) helps you keep the car sideways and in control while sliding, but if it breaks, it’s like having the bad one (Open Differential), which can make things go wrong and the car harder to control. So, having the right setup in the back of your car helps you slide smoothly and stay in charge during this exciting driving technique.

Another solution is to take the open differential and weld the spider gears together, you can do this by platting the rear of the diff and welding everything together to ensure it is robust. The majority of grassroots level drivers go with this option as it is cost effective and reliable. Personally, I would rather a welded differential than an LSD, even with freshly rebuild LSDs, I have had the clutches wear out and the diff opens up. When on track this can create a fairly sketchy situation very fast. At Texas Drift Academy we do weld the LSDs in the 350z just to keep the feeling consistent.

Next in line, we have the handbrake – an absolute game-changer. This tool is at the core of drifting, allowing us to lock up the rear wheels. Its most common application? Initiating a drift by pulling the handbrake and deftly turning the front wheels to kick out the back of the car creating an oversteer situation, from there we can continue the drift.
But that’s not all the handbrake can do. Need to extend your drift line or play catch-up in a tandem? The handbrake is your trusty companion, offering flexibility and control in every slide.
